6 May 2019. We got the wedding dates!^^

We initially searched for auspicious dates online as Ming wasn’t really in favour of finding a fengshui master to 算日子. However, being the superstitious me, I felt like I really wanted to and Ming caved in :).

From the reviews online, it seemed that Long Tian Xiang and David Tong are two of the more popular fengshui masters. I was inclined to engage Long Tian Xiang as he gave three years worth of dates and might tell couples a little bit about their bazi compatibility. But too bad he stopped helping couples to come up with the dates since last year!

So David Tong it is and he’s really popular! Ming and I first contacted him on 13 April and the next available slot was only on 1 July! However we visited BOWS wedding fair in May and would need a date before we can book the venue. I was still worried that we would miss the promo price and wedding fair perks but just the next day David Tong contacted me saying that he got a slot open. Talk about coincidence! We met the next day at Starbucks and tadaa~ one more thing to strike off from the long to-do list!

One year..

25 July.

One year from now, our lives will be joined together. It will be an adventure.

Slightly apprehensive, and mostly excited :).

The Proposal

23rd June 2020. I’ve been counting down towards this day ever since I guessed it!

It started from one month plus ago. Ming asked me if I wanted to go on a picnic in June. I didn’t suspect anything initially until he started asking a few more times and with a little wink of his.

I’m like “okayyyy, there’s something going on” hahaha.

Ming also looked super happy when I said I shifted my Sunday tuition away to Tuesdays. I suddenly thought of which is the day that June 23 falls on this year, and it’s on Sunday! 23rd June was the day we first met two years ago, and the day Ming considered us to be together hahaha.

Much as I wanted a surprise, I was very looking forward for the day. I even went to dye my hair and prep my nails a few days before! I let it out to a few friends that 23rd June was my proposal date as I couldn’t hold in my excitement.

Morning was a rush. I woke up early to prepare the picnic food and to doll up myself. Ming changed the meeting place to Raffles Place and was asking me to guess where we were going. I couldn’t have guessed it even if he gave me more clues! I was running late by 15 mins, and we had to catch something at 11am. What could it be that there’s a timing? A show? Exhibition? Staycation? Spa?

At the MRT platform, I saw Ming looking smart in a pink shirt and white berms. He was holding a brown paper bag containing a bouquet of roses :). I was expecting flowers as he said he will give me during special occasions. But I was still happy seeing it, and there’s fairy lights on it :)).

We rushed to Marina South Pier and tadaa, we were going to St John Island! That’s why I would never have guessed it cause I haven’t been there before and would never have thought of it!

20190623_105552Boarding ferry to St John~

St John Island was half an hour ferry ride away. The sun was so strong that day, with no hint of rain at all! We felt quite blessed by the good weather although it’s a tad hot as it was rainy for the past few days and weather forecast predicted it to rain that day too.

20190623_105815My man, me and my pretty flower with pretty fairly lights :)).

20190623_110927.jpg

I was surprised to see quite a number of people at St John. We walked a distance to Lazarus Island as Ming said the beach there was quite pretty. However we ended up at some forested area and it was just stone wall and sea. I was a little dismayed by the place Ming suggested to lay the picnic mat and we decided to head back.

Luckily for us, we found the white sandy beach area and a shady area under the tree.

DSCF7076.jpgHere’s my man. Poor thing as he’s down with fever that day :(. He was quite warm when I touched him.

DSCF7082.jpgThe mango, prawn and cucumber soba salad I prepared.

DSCF7085.jpgTaking a lot of photos and making full use of the tripod we lugged there.

DSCF7079

I was famished by the time and the salad was finished in a while. We sat there, chatted and gazing at the people on the yatches. I got sleepy and was a little impatient, wondering when he wanted to propose. I did notice Ming sneaking looks at me, gauging the right moment hahaha.

Then.

He took out some cards! He asked if I’m ready hahahaha. (I was thinking of whether to video it down as my camera was already on the tripod. Decided not to in the end as I wanted to truly feel the moment without being conscious of the camera. Major regrets now haha!)

20190623_135619

The first card was a watercolour drawing of us in our Mickey couple tee, and a snow white castle in the background. It was our first trip together to Hong Kong! Ming read out the words he wrote behind, and I felt touched.

He continued with the second card, us on a yellow brick road. It’s our sunflower day at Gardens by the Bay. Written behind was the wishes he had for us both :).

Third one, it was him kneeling down with a ring and asking the words.

“Will you marry me?”

20190623_135434

I wanted to tell him about my thoughts, but I suddenly felt a little shy. I reached behind him for my bag to take out a ‘I said YES!’ card that I have prepared instead. Later he thought I wanted to take tissue and I shared that I was close to tearing, if only he have more cards prepared hahahaha.

Before putting the ring on me, I wanted him to do the traditional way of asking haha. Kneeling down on one knee, Ming asked me again.

“Will you marry me?”

“Yes”

And, I’m officially being reserved (his words haha).

When the sun became less hot (I still got a bit burnt =.=), we went out for our diy casual photoshoot!

DSCF7091-2.jpgI made the card just for this shot!

Some shots on the beach. The sand was really white and fine. Ming said to tell people he proposed in Maldives haha.

DSCF7154.jpgAnother one!

DSCF7149.jpgThe goofy him that I like :).

20190623_151619.jpg

Ming finally piggyback me! It’s my little wish to be piggyback by him and I felt touched that he’s willing to do that despite being feverish :).

DSCF7150-2.jpg

DSCF7152.jpg

We caught the 4.50pm ferry back to Marina. And that’s my proposal story :).

I’ve always tell Ming that I wanted a special proposal, a proposal that he put in effort to create. From young, I’ve fantasize what my own proposal will be like. A younger me wanted a proposal by the beach, decorated with a leading trail of flower petals and ring in a sea shell. Or in a room with lots of decorations and photos.

DSCF7158.jpg

This proposal, initially I expected lots of decorations on the picnic area. Letting go of these romanticised expectations, I began to appreciate and felt touched by Ming’s effort.

After our unit selection, I started browsing the internet on renovation and wedding related stuffs. Yea I know it’s a little early but I can’t help haha. It’s so exciting to be able to build my own home from scratch!

I started to feel the stress the more I read on the Internet. I’ve always thought I’m an ala carte bride as I have a photographer in mind and I wanted to cut cost as much as possible. Renting a $800 gown is crazy! I could have bought like 10 dresses for that amount of money! But I wanted to don on a beautiful white gown once in my lifetime, so it’s money that have to be spent haha. As for the evening gown and kua, I thought that those could be purchase from online sites and taobao.

My first step was reading all the forums and blogs for the best gown rental that fit within my budget. There were 3 studios that caught my eye, Rico A Mona, Digio Bridal and The Gown Warehouse. I got sidetracked along the way by recommendations for makeup artists, videographer, photographers etc and that added to my stress! So many things to compare! As Rico A Mona is having a promotion right now, I was thinking maybe it’s time to go take a look with Ming.

Yesterday was our usual Sat date and I had craving for army stew at Kko Kko Nara. We decided to stroll along Tanjong Pagar as it was still early for dinner. And.. we caught sight of Rico A Mona just opposite from our dinner place! Talk about fate haha.

We peeped in and there were no customers inside the shop.

Me: Should we go in or not? Should we go in make an appointment or just go and ask for fitting immediately?

Ming: I don’t know. Am I dressed appropriately?

This is a new experience for us. We have never stepped into a bridal shop for fitting! We decided to just go in and ask!

I liked the interior of Rico A Mona. We were greeted by Miky and she started making us comfortable and explaining the promotion package to us. I showed her the pictures of the Rico gowns I liked (I got do homework one okay! ^^). We shared with her that this was our first bridal fitting experience and she wanted us to try gowns with all the different necklines and cuttings so that I’ll know what looks nice on me.

20190413_203848

Our first bridal studio visit :).

The first one I tried was with the lace mesh material that I liked but it was too conservative on top. Too bad Rico don’t allow any photo taking! The a-line and ballgown ones I like as they makes me feel like a princess :). I never thought how I’ll look like wearing a gown and was a little amazed that it’s really quite pretty on me (ownself praise ownself haha. I always thought I’ll look fat wearing them!). Miky chose 5 to 6 white gowns for me try and she was quite enthusiastic in letting me try all the different types of gowns. I also tried one red and one dark blue cheongsam and quite like them too! Only thing is that I’ll have to start getting rid of my little tummy.

Ming got to try the suits too. Guys only have two racks of selection compared to the uncountable racks for brides haha.

Time passed really quickly, we didn’t expect to spend more than 2 hours in the shop. Miky threw in more perks for us to seal the deal and she left us to discuss about it. I found the package quite reasonable and both of us liked the gowns and service provided at Rico. I was concerned about the photography as I really wanted to engage the photographer I had in mind. Well, I guess I could engage him for the AD instead.

So… we signed with Rico and ended our search for bridal gowns before it barely began LOL. Although I’m still not fully assured of the pre-wed photography part, I feel that a layer of stress have been lifted off my shoulders :).

20190413_205638

I’m a Rico A Mona bride now!

Ending off the day with the said army stew haha. It still feels surreal that we are moving steps further towards our shared future. I’m glad to have you by my side although I didn’t see any light sparkling in your eyes when I stepped out in the gown. Hurmph! Love you haha <3 xoxo.

HDB Sale of Balance

Woo hoo I’m back! This blog serves as a keepsake of all the good memories that I had, from my baking journey to all my travels that have opened up my eyes and shaped me somehow. So now I decide to write down one of life greatest decision for memory sake next time too!

Ming and me were finally ready to apply for the HDB BTO back in November last year. We had actually secretly looked at the HDB release in May but none of us mentioned anything to each other haha. When the location of  the Tampines BTO, GreenGem was out, we were really excited! It’s in Tampines West, near Bedok reservoir and just 5 mins walk from the MRT! But alas, the completion date is estimated to be 2Q 2023, by then I would be 34!! I had a really hard choice, I really love the location, but I don’t want to stay at Ming’s place for 3 to 4 years after getting married! I just felt that getting married is a big adjustment and learning curve, I don’t wish to add another complexity to it.

So on the very day of BTO application, we impulsively decided to go for Sale of Balance instead. Impulsively cause I didn’t even read up much about SBF! We chose Tampines, as there were more flats available there and it’s the place I’ve grown up in.

Fast forward 1.5 months later, we got our number! We prayed for number 1 but got a not-too-bad number on our first application, 19/52. Yay we were one step closer to our future together :).
We started to do some research to come up with a list of preferred units. Google’s my best friend for that. We went to site visits to look at surroundings and sun direction and tried our best to determine which units are the best. We also started to get worried about our income eligibility which we thought to be over the limit and wrote a couple of emails of appeals (which was actually not needed as our income was well within limits as conveyed by our HDB officer later due to our circumstances).

Come February 2019, we received the date of our first HDB appointment! 19 March 2019. We were really fated with number 19 haha. Ours was the 5th day of selection for Tampines 5 room flat. For the past 4 days, I kept checking on the flats selected every few hours and gave Ming live updates haha. The flat we wanted at GreenFlora was selected by the 3rd person so we had to reselect our preferred unit again.

19 March finally came. We spent an hour with the HDB officer, telling her our selected unit, paying the $2000 option fee and signing lots of papers. We are still not yet the owner of our new home, we would only be after the signing of agreement of lease in 2nd appointment (which is just 1.5 weeks later from today!).

1555230334478
The must-take shot haha.

We had a lot of ups and downs during this journey ~ excited that GreenGem is available in Nov 2018 selection, very disappointed when we didn’t select GreenGem, worried about income eligibility, anxious when we saw flats selected one by one by the couples in front of us. But I have to admit, ours is actually quite smooth-sailing and I have a lot to be grateful for :).

Day 5: Niseko (20/2/17)

Lala ~! It was finally the day of the highlight of our trip! I’ve been looking forward to skiing ever since we bought the air tickets ^^.

Breakfast was a quick affair. LeTao double fromage cake and strawberries.

Niseko breakfast

We set off in high spirits :).

WENS8677Walking up the slopes to the meeting point. The slope up was really a good warm-up.

The lesson began at 9.45am, but we were told to arrive at Hirafu Mountain Center at 8.30am to pick up the rental gear and lift passes. Upon reaching the top of the slope, we were totally lost. Where was the Hirafu Mountain Center!

Turned out that we mistook Hirafu Welcome Center as the mountain center. See, whoever said ‘when in doubt, follow the crowd 人云亦云’ is always right! We spent a good 15 minutes trying to find the correct place and rushed like mad to the welcome center located at the other side.

WENS8678(10).jpg

Queuing for the lift passes, fitting the clothes and boots, settling the lockers etc were a blur. But at last we managed to settle everything in time for the lesson. Phew~.

WENS8678(1).jpgMe in the clowny ski clothes hahah.

We were brought to this baby slope for beginners. There was even a tiny escalator to help us get up the slope! Later I heard there wasn’t such facilities in the ski resort my friends and colleagues went to in Korea. They had to climb up the slope after every ski down and that was totally not fun!

Fitting ski.jpgHere’s the pretty Polish (I think?) instructor teaching us how to attach the ski to our boots.

The first part was learning how to start and stop.

ski_1.jpg

Next we tackled some turns. That took us a while to learn, the turns normally didn’t go the way we wanted haha.

WENS8678(8).jpgOur instructor guiding Elma along. Spot those people lining on the left side of the photo? They were standing on the escalator haha.

Skiing was so much fun that I was very unwilling to go for lunch! Lunch was at the Mountain Center itself, one huge eating place super packed with skiers and snow boarders.

WENS8678(12).jpg

After lunch, we get to practice more on the turnings over a small course.

ski_2.jpgCrashing into fence and falling down was my forte hahaha.

ski_3.jpgFinally completed the run! Not bad for a first timer hur hur!

WENS8678(15).jpgI was quite envious of people on the ski lifts and those skiers passing by our baby slope. When can I be like them!

ski_4.jpgEnding off with a picture of us two!

Skiing was really much more fun than we expected! We felt that we hadn’t had enough of it even after a full day of lesson haha. We loved it so much so that right after we reached the hotel, we approached the receptionist to help us enquire for vacancies the next day. Lucky for us, he managed to find two slots after calling a few schools!

After burning so much calories at skiing, we decided to reward ourselves for dinner (okay that skiing part was just an excuse for good food hahah). I had previously made reservations with Crab Dining Kanon for the ‘3 crab’ feast, which included snow crab hotpot, boiled hairy crab, crab gratin, and grilled king crab. I was happily overdosed with crabs :)).

crab dining kanon1.jpgWe had our own private dining area ^^.

We were greeted with the sight of appetizers and a huge hotpot.

WENS8683.JPG

Unveiling the contents inside. Slurp!

WENS8684.JPG

WENS8691.JPG

And of course, you can’t have any meal in Japan without sake.

Crab Dining Kanon2.jpg

Hairy crab was served next, completed with recommended ways of eating.

Crab Dining Kanon3.jpgO.M.G. Look at the crab gao!

I’m drooling again while typing this post. Eating crab hotpot in winter was simply amazing.

Crab Dining Kanon4.jpg

I loved everything grilled. Especially king crab legs.

Crab Dining Kanon5.jpgBackground was the hairy crab we devoured. Muahaha.

Crab gratin wasn’t bad either. Though I prefer to eat the crab itself.

WENS8705.JPG

We ended off with a small portion of rice and ice cream.

Crab Dining Kanon6.jpgWe were satisfied :).

Walking back home, we chanced upon Mariposa, which I read that it was a ‘wonderful little bakery serving amazing cream puffs and soft serve ice creams’. How could we miss trying it?! And I heard it’s a must to eat ice cream in winter ><.

Day 4: Niseko (19/2/17)

Day 4 was Niseko, the place we would be spending 3 days in (we later realised it’s not enough!).

We took the JR train to Kutchan, where we would be picked up to the hotel.

WENS8581.jpgI’m starting to like train journeys in Japan, doing nothing and just gazing at the white scenery. It’s a luxury that I hardly get to indulge in back home.

WENS8583(1)Us lugging luggage EVERYWHERE. I think I gained some muscles on my arms after my trip =.=.

Hotpot at A-Bu-Cha 2 filled our stomachs fully before our afternoon activity.

abucha2

abucha2 lunchLook at the serving size of the caesar salad! It could easily be the main course for 2 people!

Lunch warmed us nicely for the next activity – snowmobiling! We took a shuttle to Hanazono, where we were greeted with a bustling area filled with skiers and people doing all sorts of winter activities.

WENS8604Well-suited up for snowmobiling! Say I’m suave! :P

WENS8606.JPGVroom, get set and…

WENS8607gooo!

We passed by countless snowfields, seemingly untouched by no other humans. And I loved it that way :).

WENS8611.jpg

WENS8623.jpgI love the speed, the feel of the wind rushing past me. I love the feeling of being one with the nature. BUT, I hate the chilling cold that came with the fast speed, the numbness of my nose and mouth. I guess there’s always two sides to a coin hur hur.

WENS8618.JPGI fell down just before this photo was taken. Luckily the snow was so soft that the machine din’t hurt me at all! It did make my gloves wet (and freezing cold after) and make me a little fearfully cautious when tackling the beast >.<.

WENS8614.JPG

WENS8619

WENS8621.JPG

And we arrived at a slope where we created new paths and slid down anywhere at our whims. It was thrilling (and scary hahaha) to slide at the fastest speed possible, not to mention freezing. My nose, mouth and fingers were chilled until they were a little painful. I think a mask and ski gloves are a must next time! >.<

Our accommodation for the next three nights was a small serviced apartment with partial views of the snowy mountains.

Niseko accom.jpg

WENS8639.JPG

Cold weather made us lazy and we didn’t searched far for dinner. Izakaya Raku was a short throw from our apartment and it was packed when we peered in. That should be a good sign I guess haha.

Izakaya raku.jpg

A good choice it was indeed! Everything was fantastic! From the tasting sake,

WENS8654.JPG

to the cheese mochi and simmered mushrooms (nothing can go wrong with mushrooms and butter),

WENS8658

to the minced pork ball topped with mushroom (that sort of look like an eclair to me),

WENS8659.JPG

to tsukune (the meat was oh-so-tender),

WENS8663.JPG

and to grilled hokke fish (this was actually what attracted me to this izakaya in the first place!).

WENS8670.JPG

Oh oh and the grilled prawns! I started chatting with this Hong Kong guy seated beside me, and the delicious grilled smell of his prawns tempted me so much that I just had to order one for myself too! No regrets hahaha.

WENS8669.jpg

The sound of Cantonese felt so familiar, especially in a foreign country. I even eavesdropped on their conversation to test how much I could make out :D. The Hong Kong guy also shared with me about skiing and snowboarding. Turned out that he’s an avid skier and would travel every winter to different countries to ski/snowboard. I could do this too hur! :)

Day 3: Otaru (18/2/17)

It was nice waking to such a view.

WENS8411.JPG

And even nicer to drive in such a view. Flurry white snow coatining every available surface.

WENS8427.JPG

I love the sense of peace and stillness that the white scenery filled me with.

After bidding farewell to our Note, we took a train to Otaru.

WENS8456.JPGPassed by Iwamizawa. It brought back memories, the first time when I met Yuya and our shy hellos at first. It was really amazing that we met, his house wasn’t exactly near the town and would need to take an hour of train ride. I didn’t know what made me chose his house then, but I’m glad I did. I think that’s what fate is all about :).

We get to gaze at pretty sea views on our way to the small town.

WENS8460.JPG

Our hotel in Otaru. We had three beds, one for resting before we bathe and the other two for sleeping >.<.

WENS8467.JPG

Lunch was at the soba restaurant I visited previously. I was looking forward to be back, not for the soba but for the sake haha. It was the best I’ve ever had, at least in my memory.

Yabuhan soba.jpgThis was not the sake in my memory though, sads. Puffin had a good time with it nevertheless haha.

The famous Otaru Canal looked pretty in summer, but I love its winter look even more (I guess I love everything winter hahaha).

WENS8490Shadow play again! On the way to the canal.

WENS8491

WENS8494Me with the cutesy ear muffs from Kris. My very first time wearing after 2 years haha, too cute!

WENS8504

We spent the rest of the day walking down the streets of Sakaimachi, browsing through the quaint shops.

Otaru streets.jpg

WENS8515

I

really wanted to eat the cream puffs from Kitakaro as I had good memories of it. The cream was nice, but both of us prefer beard papa for the puffs.

WENS8519

And of course, I had to buy a cake from LeTao too!

WENS8526

We browsed through the music box museum too before making our way back.

Music box museum.jpgView of the music box museum in the day and night. Looked a little creepy at night though haha.

People waiting for the bus, look at the huge pile of snow around the bus stop!

At night, we wandered around in the cold for dinner.

WENS8548.JPGSaw these little shops which seemed promising. But the interior was too tiny and some are filled with cigarette smoke.

We decided on Otaru Rakuten, an izakaya a short distance away from our hotel.

Izakaya dinner.jpgThe complimentary potato side dish in the third pic was surprisingly good! So were most of the skewers and especially the sake. Elma found them to be on the salty side though.

Otaru is a pleasant seaside town to spend a relaxing day at. For a second visit, it was a little boring though as the memory of the first visit was still fresh in my mind.
